Fundación Totaí - the work in Bolivia
Fundación Totaí was founded in October 2004 in the city of Trinidad, Bolivia, the capital of the country’s picturesque but impoverished Beni region. FT was established in order to provide free or affordable services in the areas of health, sport, education and community aid as a proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
In the ensuing years, the Foundation has undergone significant growth and personnel have come and gone but the commitment to our founding principles remains unswerving.
FT’s health staff provide a range of essential services to our community, including general medicine, ENT, audiology, dentistry, nursing and paediatrics. The Foundation has gained particular renown within Trinidad – and, indeed, throughout Bolivia – for its Ear Care & Audiology services.
Thanks to support from a variety of different overseas sponsors, FT’s headquarters are equipped with a fully-functioning operating theatre and in-patients ward for Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) surgery. It is the only such centre in the whole of Bolivia. The FT Audiology division has also helped develop training materials for Ear & Hearing Care, recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the foremost texts on the subject in the Spanish language.
With hot, dry weather prevailing in Trinidad for most of the year, sporting pastimes are popular among Trinidad’s youth. Since its establishment, FT has sought to share the Good News of Jesus Christ via one of the world’s truly universal languages.
A dedicated staff provide training in basketball and football on weekday afternoons on three sites in our community. These teams compete in local championships and are known for the sporting attitude they take to the field of play, nurtured by our sports workers. FT’s Sports staff also run Bible clubs for the community during the school holidays , as well as ‘Kids Games’ ministry, which sees them take gospel-centred R.E. lessons over eight weeks in local schools, with an added dose of physical activity. FT's 'Kids Games' team also provides training for local Christians to become leaders.
Education & Community
Access to high-quality educational services in Trinidad is limited and FT endeavours to address these needs in our local community. The Bible is very much at the forefront of our efforts, whether in the Religious Education classes our staff take in local schools, or the Bible-themed English lessons offered to the community at FT’s headquarters.
On weekday afternoons, FT provides an educational support class to children in our neighbourhood, where participants also learn Bible stories, and basic English. A mother and toddler meets once a week to reach out to young families in our community. The work also extends into weekends and the Community Arts & Crafts class, where local women gather on Saturday afternoons to enjoy a shared passion and learn from God’s Word.
